Veteran actor Chandrashekhar passes away at 97

Mumbai :  Bollywood actor Chandrashekhar passed away today. He was 97. He was best known for playing Arya Sumant in the television series, ‘Ramayan’.
Anil Gaikwad from CINTAA confirmed the demise of the actor. He said that he passed away at 7 am today. The funeral is expected to be held sometime today.

When contacted, Amit Behl, Joint Secretary at CINTAA, said, “It is a big loss. Chandrashekhar sir, along with Asha Parekh, Mithunda, Amrish Puri, Amjad Khan and Ram Mohan, was instrumental in getting the land from the government where our new building is now coming up. We were so looking forward to having his presence at the inauguration, but fate had other plans.”
Chandrashekar’s son Ashok told ETimes, “Daddy passed away in sleep. He had no issues with his health. He was in the hospital for a day, last Thursday. We brought him back home and had kept all facilities including oxygen at our disposal if the need would arise. He was okay last night. The end was peaceful. We plan to perform the last rites at Pawan Hans in Vile Parle today at 4 pm.”

The senior actor appeared in about 250 films. His first film as a hero was ‘Surang’ which released in 1953. He essayed characters as the supporting actor in films like ‘Gateway of India’, ‘Fashion’ (1957), ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960) and others went on to become quite popular.

 

He also produced, directed and acted as the lead hero in his hit musical film ‘Cha Cha Cha’ (1964), which was the first film of Helen in a lead role.

 

He also served as President of the Cine Artistes Association (CINTAA) from 1985 to 1996.

 

He was the grandfather of TV actor Shakti Arora. In 2019, Shakti had shared an adorable picture with him. He had also written a sweet caption along with it. His post read, “My grandfather at his smiling best.😇 #chandrashekhar #veteranactorchandrashekhar #nanaji #humfilmihain #96andgoingstrong.”
